November!! Our holiday season commences and runs for two months!! We continue to enjoy the warm lingering fall weather which brought drought conditions and is now giving way to cooler and wetter weather.
The big initial activity is Veterans Day! Our Post made a significant contribution to the Heritage Hospice Veterans Appreciation Day on November 8 starting at 11:00L. This dinner is held at the Armory in SE Danville. You have a choice of meals, and you leave with a prize and a sense of being appreciated! Plan to attend if you are a veteran. The weather looks great, and they provide golf cart transportation from the parking field to the Hall. The Post is hosting its own celebration of its veterans on 11 November. We will celebrate Dale Harmon on that day as well as he is coming to enjoy that day and Karaoke as part of his “bucket list” in the short time he has left. Dale contributed to our Post very significantly with his gift of construction and woodworking skills.
Our members enjoyed a fine Halloween party at the Post! The costumes were quite excellent. Our thanks for organizing this event goes to Ruby who ensures all our Post events run successfully.
We concluded the construction work at the Post. In hindsight, the Post got behind on its maintenance due to funding and the Post was now able to hire a Post member that does construction work for a profession. The Finance Committee agreed on the work to be performed, and it got accomplished quite quickly and very professionally. Some repairs were over due and becoming a safety hazard. We replaced the Social Club’s existing entry ramp with a new covered ramp, rebuilt the entry door framing, installed the Legion Emblem over the fireplace in the Hall, and completed the wainscotting of the wall hall as it ran from the Hall to the Social Club. The Executive Committee/membership affirmed the decisions of the Finance Committee in accomplishing this work at our scheduled 5 November Membership meeting.
The Radio group continues its membership skill development through weekend participations in Radio contests in the Post Radio Room. This weekend is a fox hunt (looking for a hidden transmitting radio).
The Post Legion Riders are considering invites to parades and school events. The Auxiliary did a “ Truck or Treat” fundraiser, taking flags to a couple of local nursing homes for Veterans Day, and will be helping Ruby with snacks for the Social Club on Veterans Day. Vice Cmdr. Regina Carney awaits the decisions of our local schools to participate in the coming Legion Oratorial Contests. On behalf of our membership, I thank each of these groups and their members for their extra work to make their missions and their Post a success!!
The Quilts of Valor organization will award 5 of our Post veterans with handmade Quilts of Valor. The ceremony is a family event and is scheduled for Saturday, November 23rd at 1:30 PM. Following that ceremony at 5:30, the Post will host its annual free Thanksgiving Dinner. We have a lot to be thankful for and encourage you and your family to attend. Feel free to bring a dessert or favorite dish.
The next membership meeting is 3 December 2024 at 7 PM.
Respectfully,
Tony A. Cromwell
