COMMANDER’S CORNER
July enters the scene under a heat dome!! It persisted after the 4th of July weekend. On the 4th of July, our Post entered its historically first float into Danville’s military parade celebrating the nation’s 250th Anniversary. It was a truly beautiful float with a sound system playing military related music. We salute our Post Auxiliary for an exceptional piece of work!! Several of the Ladies walked alongside the float handing out souvenirs to the parade attendees. In several locations, on the parade route, the audience “cheered” the presence of our American Legion float….I was touched by that sentiment. After the parade, the Auxiliary was treated to a pizza lunch and refreshments. This was a great team effort, and we call out Ruby Crouch for her leadership in making the entire project a great success!!! Atta girls!!! Look for pictures on our Post web site.
Thompson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore honored some 250 veterans of whom 150 reside at the Center June 11-13th. Adjutant Susan Craddock represented our Post. Thompson Hood is one of the large beneficiaries of our charity donations. It is gratifying to enable one of our lady veterans to get the honors she earned.
The Ky Department hosted its annual convention in Louisville on June 18-20th. Again, Regena, Susan, and Sr. Vice Miller represented our Post. The Legion’s National Convention will be held in Louisville from August 28 to Sept 3rd at the Kentucky international Convention Center.
We continue to upgrade our Post. We completed the replacement of the metal doors on the South and South west side of the Hall. The original doors were worn out and a maintenance and security challenge. The new doors work nicely and are freshly painted black to go with our décor. The exterior property fence was primed and painted silver. It was rusting and created a poor image with freshly painted Post and Annex buildings.
Our membership meeting on 7 July was attended by a couple of new members. We covered the latest events (parades, veteran ceremonies, conventions, etc.). Our Post continues to prosper with a very active membership and successful charitable gaming operations allowing us to make significant charitable donations. We commenced operations with our new gaming license today. Under our new license, we will no longer play the “Queen of Hearts” game.
A reminder for our membership: The Earl Belcher Pavilion enjoys freshly painted tables. It’s a great place to take the family for a quiet picnic. It is bounded by a grass lawn allowing sports activities. Bring the family out! Power is available in the Pavilion.
