COMMANDER’S CORNER
Our 1 July membership meeting was quite unique and rewarding! While we anticipated hosting our Boys State graduate (family on vacation), we eagerly greeted Mr. and Mrs. Chris Harkins. Chris is the head coach for the Burgin High School Bull Dog baseball team. Chris’s coaching and administrative skills, supplanted with a Post 46 financial donation, completely turned around a distraught losing team into winners. Now, a well-equipped team was proud of their Legion sponsor, its values, and its relationship to their parents/grandparents, etc. Chris spoke of the coming season and their new baseball uniforms with Legion, Post, and patriotic markings. Their success enticed 5 more players to join their team. Chris continues to schedule the team in post-season play to continue the building process. The school and town are very grateful to our Post for this support. Our Post is committed to continuing support of this team.
The Auxiliary is back promising exciting events to come. Ruby is the new President and relieves Donna Prewett. We thank Donna for her hard work to keep the Auxiliary operational. We highlighted those events and one of the important ones was their support of the veterans in the Big Band Festivals! Heavy career requirements can savage one’s time available to support volunteer activities. Thank you, Donna! Ruby introduced Andrea Harkins (wife of the coach) as the new Secretary of the Auxiliary. Andrea inspired our members with her natural energy and excitement as to their future planned activities. Lots of fund-raising ideas, local community activities, and Post member support. I will continue to update you on their actions in future Commander’s Corners.
Our Radio Club participated in the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Field Day again this year. Field Day started in 1933 as a way for Amateur Radio operators to test their emergency communication skills during emergencies. Our club used a power generator and temporary antennas. With some new members, it is also an awesome learning opportunity! I commend the club for its continuous activities, and its growth speaks to the happiness and satisfaction of its members.
As we go through life, we find ourselves elated by good things happening to others that are so giving of themselves. A recent example is of our Service Officer, Dennis Weiskircher. Dennis has mastered the Service Officer skills and represents the central Kentucky region. As such, he continually meets with veterans to attain the VA benefits due them and their families. He is changing people’s lives daily! He was also a minister and acts as a back up Chaplain to our Chaplain. He recently went through some very serious medical conditions. Dennis and his wife just completed a bucket list item: an Alaskan cruise lasting two weeks!!! Congrats!!!!
Our Post continues to do well thanks to the high participation rate of its members. Our Charitable gaming is a huge success enabling our greatly increased Charitable giving to local charities/activities. .
The next membership meeting is 5 August 2025 at 7 PM.
Respectfully,
Tony A. Cromwell
