COMMANDER’S CORNER

Our summer is moving right along with us now into August.  The children/grandchildren/great grandchildren are starting school again!  This was one of our hotter summers and we take hope in the current forecast of a cooler period ahead.  The hot weather helps your Post in that more of our members are forced indoors and seek the comfort of friends and entertainment in our Post.  It also raises our electrical costs via the increased air conditioning loads. However, know your Post is flourishing and is in a much more secure financial condition.  We have a significant savings account with much of those funds in high interest, short term CDs.  The high participation rate of our members combined with an excellent entertainment schedule is moving us forward smartly.  The Cornhole League really enjoys our Post as it is ideal for their games.  There are some professional level players in that group.  They play monthly at the Post and enjoy all aspects of the Post.  They plan a party this coming weekend to commemorate the one-year anniversary of playing at the Post…barbecues, etc.

The Radio Group is actively repairing and tuning up their Post antennas for the forthcoming Kentucky emergency tests.  Our Post will support the HF component of these tests and will likely be handed the primary role in executing that mission.  We set the stage for that capability by moving from a back-up role to a primary role in that last exercise due to high noise levels in Frankfort.  This emergency comms role is one of the primary Legion missions.  They continue to perform the monthly, national Legion DSTAR nets.  Kudos on their continuing testing programs and new members!!

Our membership meeting this month featured two presentations.  The first was a presentation by Tom Tye of Tye Financials in Danville. His brother was a Korean POW/MIA.  His story was fascinating, detailed, and provided testimony as to the persistence and thoroughness of our government’s work in locating, IDing, and returning MIA remains to their rightful homes.  We thank Mr. Tye for his presentation.  The second presentation featured a presentation of a Quilt of Valor to Post 46 Air Force veteran Ken Walton by the regional Quilt of Valor director Caroline Elliott.  These quilts are hand made and exemplify excellence in all respects.  They are comfort quilts designed to be used daily by the receiving veteran and not to be placed in a closet.  The presentation is impressive in its warmth and appreciation for the service member receiving the award.  I was offered an additional five quilt awards and have submitted five more Post 46 veterans for those awards.

Our Post Legion Riders supported the July 6 Crab Orchard Parade.  They plan to support the Healing Field Fund Raiser Ride on 7 September at Post 34 in Lawrenceburg.

The Auxiliary continues with their fund-raising road blocks and are now purchasing customized T shirts for their activities.  They are providing food for the Sunday Corn Hole players.

Our membership renewal season is underway and close to half of our members have renewed.  Thank you for renewing your support of our Post and your fellow veterans.  Enjoy the last of Summer!!

The next membership meeting is on 3 Sept 2024 at 7 PM.

Respectfully,

Tony A. Cromwell
