COMMANDER’S CORNER
Hello April!! The warmer weather is refreshing with just occasional Frost warnings. We also get a chance to practice our lawn mowing and landscaping skills. Hi!
The Post enjoyed a robust April membership meeting. It contained a lot of news and updates. I announced nine March monetary donations totaling $16,250 to our local/regional community charities. Your Post is making a difference! We have budgeted some $80K in charitable donations over the remainder of 2026.
Earlier, we donated $10K to the Burgin High School baseball team as a follow on to last year’s investment. Our members were very excited to see our funds help this baseball (Legion Sports Mission) team. We received a nice letter of thanks and learned the boys’ baseball team was cancelled for this year due to the boys deciding to work. The letter invited us to attend a 9 May veterans celebration. Sr Vice Harold Miller will attend as he has done outstanding work in the school in establishing an Amateur radio classroom and coordinating the
baseball activity. Some of our Post veterans will attend with him.
I recently had reason to review our inactive Legion Rider Chapter. I found our Rider Charter (founded by a couple of now deceased combat vets) was no longer listed on the Department website due to 2 years of non-
payment of yearly fees. Of the members, several no longer were in the Legion, most were expired, and only two officers were current on Legion dues. There were no rides or meetings, and they rarely attended our Post
membership meetings (a requirement). I ceded the Charter back to the Department along with a $500 Donation to cover lapsed dues and advance the Rider mission.
Our Radio club continues to work with our Sr. Vice on the Burgin HS Amateur Radio class. They are also regularly putting their Post station on the air each weekend. A great learning experience as they work various contests. They continue to test prospective applicants for FCC licenses. I commend this group for their activity and their dedicated attendance to our Post membership meetings with a comprehensive activities report.
Charitable Gaming legislation success will continue to allow charitable gaming across the many veterans and other groups that use this activity to advance the welfare of our local communities and remain viable entities. Gaming activities in businesses(dining rooms, gas stations, etc.) are curtailed. It’s a legislative area of concern.
April is the month in which we nominate officers and elect them in the May membership meeting. Our current officers have all offered to continue in their current positions for another year.
Our Post is hosting a Quilts of Valor ceremony on Saturday, 25 April at 2:00 pm. Five Veterans will receive quilts. Among the honorees is the Mayor of Harrodsburg, a Danville fireman, the Adjutant and Commander of Post 46, and one other veteran. Refreshments will be served.
The next membership meeting is on 5 May 2026 at 7 PM. It will complete the Post Officer elections process.
Respectfully,
Tony A. Cromwell, Post Commander kypost46@gmail.com
