Its October!! The season of Fall Colors on our trees and the month ending with Halloween festivities!! We welcome the break in the summer heat and relish the cooler fall temperatures.
The area Corn Hole league continues to routinely use our hall for their games. They really enjoy the Post Hall/facility.
Our Charitable Gaming operations continue to expand. We recently converted a large storage room to a non-smoking gaming room. In doing so, we needed to add a storage shed to the exterior of the Post. That work was accomplished very professionally by one of our Post members. The old decking was much frailer than we realized and replacing it with all new construction saved a collapse. The new decking enjoys an extended shed
roof covering to allow a dry deck. Inside the Post, a new set of lockable French Doors were installed to separate the new gaming area from the Hall. The non-smoking gaming area immediately enjoyed membership use!!
The Post expanded its Social Club during the COVID shutdown period. Some of our veterans with fine carpentry skills and a donation from the VFW Women Auxiliary enabled the Post to very dramatically expand its original social club. The outside of the wall remained bare since that time with plans to finish them with a type of stone finish. We are now working to complete that work using the latest in home/commercial building materials to wainscot the wall with a stone wall appearance. The center of the wall will feature a very nice,
simulated fire place with a large Legion emblem placed above the fire place. I look to have this work complete this month. Additionally, we expect to add an awning to the back side of the Post to cover the entrance ramp and door. This will provide protection for members entering the Post and preclude much of the difficult snow/ice removal.
The first weekend in October saw our Radio Club in action. The annual 200+ mile Bourbon Chase Marathon features a couple hundred runners(teams) running through Danville. Our Radio Club spots the bib numbers of runners 2.7 miles out (Exchange Zone 12-Weisiger Park) by radio to the exchange zone for the public 8 X 10’ display of bib numbers located at the Central Kentucky Federal Savings Bank at 4 th & Main Street. This system alerts the waiting exchange team runners as to the proximity of their coming team member. RAGNAR is the national organizer anticipating some 230 teams, and we processed 179 teams. Kudos to Andy Rose (KI6SEP) who organized the event for the Radio Club and reported the event went very well. It is the only exchange to provide this information, and the runners and public are
very appreciative. Eight members of the Radio Club participated to make this a huge and unique success.
The Quilts of Valor organization will award 5 of our Post veterans with hand made Quilts of Valor. The ceremony is a family event and is scheduled for Saturday, November 23 rd at 1:30 PM. Following that ceremony at 5:30, the Post will host its annual free Thanksgiving Dinner. We have a lot to be thankful for and encourage you and your family to attend. Feel free to bring a dessert or favorite dish.
The next membership meeting is 5 November 2024 at 7 PM.
Respectfully,
Tony A. Cromwell
