COMMANDER’S CORNER
Mid-winter—Mother Nature served up a string of weather that left most stranded at home, especially if you lived in the rural areas. I cancelled a membership meeting and moved a couple of finance meetings to preclude our members from taking undue risks. Many of our members are older and no longer fall and bounce back up…more like landing as an over ripe tomato! We are truly grateful to a couple of our members that keep the Post plowed out as their contribution to the Post!
I am pleased to announce the signing of a 4-year gaming contract that extends our current contract. We increase our gaming machines by 5 for a total or 35 (max by law). The very positive financial terms continue. We are exceptionally happy with our vendor, and our members really enjoy their gaming experiences providing a significant revenue stream. We expect to increase our Charitable donations to various charities, etc. from some $38K to $76-80K.
We just approved a funding request from the Burgin High School baseball team. We funded this very needy group last year and it allowed them to compete with pride and success. The current request added some infrastructure items to upgrade their facility. Baseball is one of the Legion Missions and the gratitude/feedback we receive is most rewarding! Sr. Vice Cmdr. Harold Miller is working closely with the school and has also established an amateur Radio class in the school with an embedded operational radio station. Harold is a licensed ham and a member of the Post’s radio club (WRARC). The Post club is very active in supporting Harold in this project. Harold recently retired from a technical business and is an invaluable asset in working on a variety of issues, especially technical ones. Our sincere thanks to Harold and WRARC!!!!
The significant number of veterans assisted by your Post with VA-related claims and issues is highly commendable. This “divine” work is changing the lives of those affected veterans and their families. Our Service Officer, Dennis Weiskircher, is a veteran and retired minister providing this divine work at the Post and Leestown. He is a member of our Radio Club and serves as a backup Chaplain! He received a “Quilt of Valor”, and we salute and thank him most gratefully!!!
Adjutant Susan Craddock uniquely comes to our Post from the missile fields and Strategic Air Command in South Dakota! Duty in that Command is very serious business and hazardous in many ways. The many present chemicals contributed to her cancers and disability. Despite those medical issues, we enjoy her enthusiasm in volunteering for Blood Drive work, calling members, and performing her highly detailed work as our Post Adjutant. She is also generous in supporting our Post activities(good cook)! Susan, please accept our deep appreciation for your extensive efforts in supporting our Post mission!!
The next membership meeting is on 3 March 2026 at 7 PM. (note: on 4 March, my wife and I celebrate 60 years of marriage).
Respectfully,
Tony A. Cromwell
