Our August membership meeting continues the theme of “Good News” from my July Commanders Corner! We hosted Mr. George McClure who recently completed the Boys State program we sponsored him to. An impressive young man, entering his senior year, told us of his experience in the program and how it changed his life. Our Post has sponsored some half dozen young men to this program and to a person (and oft parents), tell of the positive changes they experienced. George answered several questions from our members, and he plans to pursue the legal profession after high school graduation. His father is a very successful attorney in Danville. We offer our congratulations to Mr. Mc Clure and a sincere thank you to Vice Commander Carney for her diligent work in recruiting and enabling George to attend the program. Look for his picture on our Post web page receiving Legion and Post awards.
We enjoyed the presence of two new members. One, a recent Navy retiree from the Air Craft Carrier ranks and a member who officiates high school games and talked of the change in the Burgin Bull Dog team after the intervention of our Post. I talked of the Post making a “difference” in our charitable donation mission. Our Chaplain surfaced the needs of a community center heavily damaged by a tornado near Summerset. They needed $15K to meet the insurance deductible…we sent $5K and made a big difference! We bought 6,000 meals via Gods Pantry…we made a difference! We sent $3K to the Fisher house program…we made a difference! We sent $450 to the Danville fire dept for a children’s program….making a difference. The Red Cross and Salvation Army also benefited. High participation rates in our Charitable Gaming business are enabling the Post to make a significant difference in our community! Meanwhile, we continue to clean up a few remaining items in restoring our Post. We await new exit signs for the Hall and the installation of a heat pump system for our non-smoking section of the Charitable Gaming area.
While our membership meeting was in progress, Ruby Crouch, President of the Auxiliary, met with her group. It was very exciting to hear of the plans and enthusiasm of this remarkable group. A Post is very blessed when it has an active and effective Auxiliary! I am most confident our membership will see the results of their work shortly and over the long term. A big thank you to each member that stepped up to serve and to Ruby for her experienced leadership!
It was great to exit the heat dome of July and transition to better days in August! Enjoy the outdoors, but be cautious of those occasional “hot” days! Our Post continues to do well thanks to the high participation rate of its members. Our Charitable gaming is a huge success enabling our greatly increased Charitable giving to local charities/activities. .
I canceled the September meeting as it occurs the day after Labor Day. The next membership meeting is 7 October 2025 at 7 PM.
Respectfully,
Tony A. Cromwell
